The IRS has unveiled a new tax form for reporting capital gains and losses from stocks, bonds, mutual funds and similar investments. Starting with the 2011 tax year, investment transactions will be reported on the new Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets. A pdf version of
Form 8949 is posted at the IRS Web site; instructions for this new form is included with the instructions for Schedule D.


The IRS has also revised Schedule D and Form 1099-B.

If you sold your main home and made a profit, you may be able to exclude that profit from your taxable income. Here's how it works.

$250,000 Exclusion on the Sale of the Main Home


Individuals can exclude up to $250,000 in profit from sale of the main home (or $500,000 for a married couple) as long as you have owned the home and lived in the home for a minimum of two years. Those two years do not need to be consecutive.
